"Photographing Widows in India? Well, That Came Out of Nowhere."
I have lived through marriage, divorce, a second chapter in a second marriage, widowhood, and many other chapters of life — together and alone. And I always knew: a woman on her own, without a man to look after her, is vulnerable. Everywhere — not only in the developing world, but even for women considered strong. Like me.
Then one day — a window opened. A bell rang. I read an article about widows — and an idea came to me.
I reached out to the NGO MAITRI, which provides homes for women cast out by their families in India: when the father dies, these women become unwanted. The organization builds them homes — and lives. I introduced myself, received an invitation, and within two weeks I was on my way. To India. To Vrindavan — the city of widows… the city of Krishna…
I stayed in the homes where they live — with them and with the staff who run the place. I photographed and talked at length, without a shared language. But above all — I simply was there.
In a flash of inspiration, I bought an abundance of flowers near one of the temples — and we were photographed together: with lotus blossoms, garlands of yellow marigolds, and jasmine flowers.
Together, we traveled to Amritsar in Punjab — and at the Pakistani border, a border-closing ceremony takes place every evening. The women danced there — and our mothers danced too, for the very first time in their lives, in public, out in the open.
I said goodbye to the mothers. Not widows — mothers. That is what they are called in Vrindavan.
I have arrived at a new chapter of my own life: photographer — in the fullest sense of the word.
